In general most of the beach sediments from the area under study are medium sand-sized, unimodal, moderately sorted, nearly symmetrical and mesokurtic in terms of their grain-size distribution. The standard deviation shows minor variations from September to December. The heavy minerals commonly found in these sediments in the order of decreasing abundance are hornblende, opaques, hypersthene, garnet, mica, sillimanite, augite and diopside. The percentage of quartz in the light mineral fraction varies from 57% to 99%. The provenance of these beach sands is believed to be the rocks of the Western Ghats - charnockite and gneissic terrain.- Quartz Grain Surface Textures as Indicators of Depositional History of Beach and Strand Plain Sediments Along the North Kerala Coast
